On 31 October  2011 Addax Petroleum acquired an 80% equity interest in Addax Petroleum Cameroon Company LLC (formerly owned by Shell). Since then, Addax Petroleum has been the most active upstream company in Cameroon, increasing its net production by 40%.

In addition to the discovery of the Padouk field in the Iroko licence in October 2012 – which led to first oil within 18 months – Addax Petroleum implemented an active drilling campaign for the redevelopment of the Mokoko Abana field, improving production from an average of 15,000 bopd to approximately 18,500 bopd.

In 2011, the Mokoko Abana field’s production was in steep decline, but thanks to expertise in optimising oil recovery from mature fields, Addax Petroleum was able to curb this downward trend and increase production by 20%.

The Mokoko Abana field is a mature asset with more than 30 years on production and approximately 130 wells drilled. Ninety wells are currently producing, 20 are shut in and some have been abandoned. The field’s total production comes from existing wells with very high water cuts.

Most of the achieved production increase comes from production and process optimisation of the existing wells’ facilities, with a large impact due to the activities conducted by Addax Petroleum’s  own pulling unit and an active drilling campaign.

The Pulling Unit Mokoko Abana (“PUMA”) alongside additional well services equipment is helping to optimise production in a cost-effective manner.  When Addax Petroleum initially took over operations, all services were contracted making well interventions more expensive and subject to long delays.

Thanks to the PUMA, the same operations can now be completed in less time and at lower cost, allowing for secondary targets that might have been initially evaluated as un-economical to be put on production.

Operating mature fields like Mokoko Abana requires innovative approaches. Thanks to our expertise, Addax Petroleum has succeeded in reducing operating costs and increasing productivity by implementing a fit-for-purpose solution suitable for such assets.

Addax Petroleum has an ambitious growth strategy focused on increasing production effectively by optimising oil recovery from under-developed fields and sourcing new venture opportunities. The Company looks forward to transferring the Mokoko Abana experience to other operations in Cameroon and beyond.
